Originally started in 1919 as the 2nd Group (Observation), it soon became the 5th Group (Pursuit and Bombardment) in 1922 and, by 1940, was redesignated the 5th Bombardment Group. The 5th was stationed at Luke Field in Oahu, Hawaii, and ended up a victim in the bombing of Pearl Harbor in 1941. The group lost both equipment and personnel. After unsuccessful attempts to bomb Japanese ships during the Battle of Midway, the group moved around over the next few years participating in various attacks and missions over the Philippines, Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, and parts of Europe. In spring of 1944, the 5th earned a Distinguished Unit Citation for raiding action on Woleai’s Japanese base and another DUC for attacks on Balikpapan, Borneo, in September of the same year. Post World War II, the group was inactive from 1952 to 1991. Their B-52s were able to support Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq in 2001 and 2003.

The 91st Operations Group was started as the 91st Bombardment Group (Heavy) in 1942 to be sent to Europe at the start of World War II, one of the first of its kind to arrive there. Their B-17s were able to provide severe attacks on many important enemy targets. Between 1943-44, the group bombed several marshall and navy yards and won 2 Distinguished Unit Citations for destroying one such yard and aircraft factories over Germany. After supporting the invasions at Normandy and Saint Lo in summer of 1944, the group’s involvement in major action continued at the Battle of the Bulge, crossing of the Rhine River, and assisting with German prisoner camp evacuations at the war’s end. After being sent home to the U.S. postwar, the Bomb Group became a long-range photographic reconnaissance group and was one of the biggest and most active photographic flying groups during the Korean War. The 91st kept up its stealthy work for the Cold War, during which they were tasked with the Air Force’s first super-secret “ferret” missions over the Far East islands, Sakhalin Island, Siberia, and other Soviet-controlled areas. Though inactivated in 1952, the group was brought back in 1996 at Minot AFB to be one of three Air Force missile units in charge of the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missiles.
